Antik İtalyan yarımadasında kalan bir eski Romalı kenti. M.Ö. 24.08.79 yilinda Vesuv volkan patlamassnda yok olmuştur. Aynı günde Stabiae ve Pompeji kentleri de yıkılmış, yok olmuştur. Destanlara göre Herkül kentin kurucusudur.Herkulaneum`de yaşiyan insanlar bir pyroklast gaz ve toz rüzgarı tarafindan uyurken yok edildiler. Pyroklast gaz ve toz rüzgarlar 500°C `den yüsek olmaktadırlar. İlk kez Aristo’nun öğrencisi Theophrastos (Θεόφραστος) tarafından (314 M.Ö.) Herakleion olarak yazılarında bu kenti anlatmıştır. Italyanlar bu kente Ercolano diyorlar.
