Homeros'a göre Zeus ile Dione'nin kızıdır.Adı "köpükten çıkan" anlamına gelir.Hesiodos'un Theogonia'sında ise sulardan çıkar (Uranos ile Köpüklerin birleşmesinden doğar).Aphrodite sevgi,aşk ( cinsel aşk ) ve yasak ilişkilerin tanrıçasıdır.Üremek için birleşmeyi de simgeler.En fazla cinsel ilişkiye giren fahişeler Aphrodite'e göre önemlidir,hiç ilişkiye girmemiş kadınlar ise kadından sayılmazlar.

Praksiteles'in (Praxiteles) Knidos Aphrodite heykeli için Phyrne'den model olmasını istemiştir.Praksiteles'in en önemli özelliği Apollon'daki gibi vücuda "S" formu vermesidir.Milo Aphrodite'yi en beğenilen tasviridir.Ozanlar Altın Aphrodite olarak sıfatlandırırlar.Bu güzeller güzeli tanrıça hep gülümser,işveli ve gönül alıcıdır.Aphrodite tasviri günümüzde en çok ayna saplarında görülür.Ayağının altında istiridye,yunus,kaplumbağa gibi hayvanlar olabilir.Saçlarını kurutmaya çalışan (denizden çıktığı için ) Aphrodite heykeli sıkça görülür.Sulardan doğduğu için suyla ilgili binalarda süsleme olarak ortaya çıkar.
